Getting a\u00a0new pet is an exciting time for both your family and your new furry friend. \u00a0Whether you have added a young kitten or a mature dog to your home, establishing rules\u00a0and boundaries are important from\u00a0the very first\u00a0day. \u00a0Here are 10 tips to help prevent behavior problems.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Set rules immediately and stick to them.<\/li>\n
  2. Avoid situations that promote inappropriate behavior.<\/li>\n
  3. Observe the pet and provide what it needs to be cared for and attended to<\/li>\n
  4. Supervise the new pet diligently through undivided individual attention and training, and restrict the pet’s access to a limited area of the house until training is complete.<\/li>\n
  5. Encourage good behavior with praise and attention.<\/li>\n
  6. Correct bad behaviors by providing positive alternatives. (A toy for a slipper, scratching post for the sofa)<\/li>\n
  7. Never physically punish or force compliance to commands. \u00a0This may lead to fear biting or aggression.<\/li>\n
  8. Don’t play rough or encourage aggression or play biting.<\/li>\n
  9. Expose pets to people, animals, and environments where you want them to live.<\/li>\n
